Abstract

The documentation of scholars in the field of Qur’anic studies, particularly in Qiraat, is a crucial effort in ensuring the continuity of the Islamic intellectual tradition, which is increasingly marginalized within the framework of modern education in Malaysia. This study examines the biography and contributions of the late Ustaz Abdul Razak, better known as Ustaz Jak Putih, as a key figure in the development of Qiraat Warsh ‘an Nafi’ in the state of Kelantan. This research adopts a qualitative approach through semi-structured interviews with family members, students, and colleagues, alongside document analysis of his teaching materials and writings. The findings indicate that Ustaz Jak Putih played a significant role in disseminating Qiraat Warsh at the grassroots level through a disciplined and practice-oriented teaching approach grounded in talaqqi and mushafahah. Despite physical limitations due to albinism, he demonstrated remarkable perseverance in both acquiring and transmitting knowledge of Qiraat. His intellectual contribution is further reflected in his work Muzakkirah Riwayat Warsh, which functions as a pedagogical introductory text featuring a systematic presentation of recitational rules, supported by practical examples to facilitate understanding of the distinctions between usul and farsy al-huruf within the riwayah. However, the analysis also reveals that the work is more instructional in nature rather than a critical scholarly text, as it lacks in-depth discussion of variant readings (khilaf al-qiraat) and comparative analysis with other riwayat. Overall, this study highlights Ustaz Jak Putih as a prominent figure in the development of Qiraat Warsh in Kelantan, while underscoring the importance of documenting local scholars in strengthening the continuity of Islamic intellectual heritage.
